Pharmacovigilance

Pharmacovigilance

Gerolymatos International applies a Pharmacovigilance system for maximum safety and efficacy of its products.

Pharmacovigilance (PV) according to the World Health Organization is defined as the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problem.

The scope of pharmacovigilance has grown significantly in recent times and is now considered to include the following domains: ADRs or events, medication errors, counterfeit or substandard medicines, lack of efficacy of medicines, misuse and/or abuse of medicines, interaction between medicines. The products under consideration go beyond conventional medicines and also include herbal medicines, other traditional and complementary products, biologicals, vaccines and medical devices.

The main goal of pharmacovigilance is thus to promote the safe and effective use of health products, in particular by providing timely information about the safety of health products to patients, health-care professionals, and the public. Pharmacovigilance is therefore an activity contributing to the protection of patients and maintaining public health. The entire scope of pharmacovigilance is to serve as a tool for product monitoring and evaluation.

Information received from patients and healthcare providers via pharmacovigilance agreements (PVAs), as well as other sources such as the medical literature, plays a critical role in providing the data necessary for pharmacovigilance to take place.

The ultimate goal of pharmacovigilance is to accurately characterize and optimize the benefit/risk ratio of a health product throughout its life cycle.
